Birmingham Water Works board restructuring probably wonât be happening soon
As the 2023 Alabama legislative session comes to a close, a bill that aims to restructure the leadership of the Birmingham Water Works (BWWB) will most likely die in the House of Representatives without going to a vote according to bill cosponsor Rep. David Faulkner, R-Mountain Brook.
While the bill, House Bill 177, may not get a full vote this year, Faulkner said he plans to continue pushing for a reevaluation of the utility’s board and upper management in future sessions.
“There’s been a lot of issues and problems with the way that the water works has been managed and it is very concerning,” Faulkner said. “And I don’t think that is a Republican or Democrat issue, I think it’s bipartisan.
“I think the people of the county [Jefferson County] and surrounding counties have concerns with the way the water works has been run. There’s obviously a lot of good people, I’m sure, that work there but I don’t feel like we’ve seen good management.”
The bill was first introduced in late March by Faulkner and Rep. Jim Carns, R-Vestavia Hills, who was the lead sponsor.
